Abstract

Abstract for paper, Summer School at PAES RUC 2011:
The gift of learning by Ph.D. Fellow Christine Revsbech

In this paper, learning and social economy, from a substantive approach, are compiled in terms of social entrepreneurship and voluntary organization as learning arenas. Social entrepreneurships are gaining attention from both market and the welfare state for social service purposes, including tasks within general education (Hulgård & Andersen, 2009; Regeringen, 2010). Learning and educational relationships can be defined as social interactions where the employed or staffer1 focuses his or her doing on social intervention (Schmidt, 2006), which is seen as potential task for voluntary organizations. Using Marcel Mauss’ conceptualization of the gift (Mauss, 1990), as ethnographic-analytical object, somewhat opens voluntary organizations as learning arenas to this analysis (Hastrup, 2003). Besides from theoretically contextualizing social entrepreneurships and voluntary organizations as learning arenas, this paper will touch on a case example from contemporary Denmark.
