Abstract

The paper deals with the question of how health and engagement in health promoting activities and lifestyle can be understood as part of and expressions of learning processes. Interest and engagement in own health is understood as closely interwoven with what is found subjectively meaningful - and thus both with the individual's everyday life and life historical experience.
On the basis of two cases it is discussed how the choice of a health-conscious approach to own life and choosing to reject certain health promoting activities can be understood as an expression of lifelong and 'life wide' learning processes.
In light of the analysis I conclude that the question of what promotes a particular person's health, without being relative, must be seen in relation to the contexts in which the person belongs, and in relation to the meanings the person attributes certain acts.
