Why to investigate everyday technologies from a first-person perspective?

Abstract

Research in the social study of technology is usually based on a third-person epistemology. Although arguing against technological determinism, studies often focus just on the effects of technological artifacts on human life and investigate the relationship between humans and technology from an external perspective without conceptualizing the everyday experiences and actions of the individual subjects. This paper builds on the basic principle of a two-sided relationship between subjects and technology. It discusses the limits of “effect-epistemologies” and develops an argumentation why to investigate everyday technologies from a first-person perspective.
