  • Environmental Risk – Assessing and Managing Multiple Risks in a Changing World

    November 16, 2015 – November 17, 2015

Technological developments over the past century have improved the quality of life for many. However, in combination with exponential population growth, human developments have negatively impacted many of the world’s ecosystems through over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution, and changes to the climate system.

The conference consists of a two day program with platform and poster presentations and encourages active participation through break-out sessions and scientific discussions among invited speakers and participants.

The purpose of the conference is to evaluate and discuss the development of cross-cutting methods to assess and manage different types of risks, both natural hazards and anthropogenic and the societal issues associated with those risks.

Overall the conference will cover both Risk Assessment and Risk Management. The conference will cover the following main topics:

    • Geospheric Hazards (e.g., volcanic eruptions; earth quakes)
    • Environmental Change (e.g., hydrological extremes; changing water cycles)
    • Anthropogenic Hazards (e.g., from industry and agriculture)
    • Societal Issues (e.g., risk perception; communication)

Innovative Services in the 21st Century

Services develop to introduce new or improved service pro-ducts, increase productivity and improve quality for custo-mers and the public's well-being. The importance of knowled-ge intensive services for growth and economic development is widely recognised. Also manual services continue to consti-tute an important aspect of modern economies, for example in the case of tourism, facility services or services in public welfare systems. Different knowledge intensive and manual services, as well as their innovativeness and economic contri-bution, are therefore crucial for solving society’s social and economic problems and for overcoming its present challen-ges. The conference will focus on innovation and develop-ment in different service sectors, the relation between inno-vation and development, and economic and societal impact in relation to present public and market economic challenges. Thus, the conference aims to build new understandings of the role of service development in the private and public sectors and society as a whole.

The RESER2015 conference will be held in Copenhagen on September 10-12, 2015.  The Doctoral Colloqium will be held prior, i.e. on September 8-9, 2015 at Roskilde University.

Roskilde University looks forward to seeing you at the annual RESER conference.

Service development and innovation for prosperity and human well-being in the 21st century

The importance of knowledge intensive services for growth, economic development as well as human well-being is widely recognised. Also manual services continue to constitute an important aspect of modern societies, for example in the case of many public welfare systems services, tourism and certain facilities management services. Both manual and knowledge intensive services continuously develop and innovate to introduce new or improved service products, increase productivity and improve quality for customers as well as the public's well-being. Development and innovativeness of knowledge intensive and manual services are crucial for meeting society's present problems of employment, sustainability, work integration, ageing and climate change as well as wider economic challenges. The RESER2015 conference will therefore focus on development and innovation in the different service sectors and their impact on prosperity and human well-being considering the present public and market economic challenges.

This conference is a forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative studies on services to ensure the active development of service research. Scholars and practitioners of management, marketing, engineering, economics, sociology, geography, or any other discipline are invited to submit papers that explore and develop a multidisciplinary understanding of various service issues. Papers can be based on literature reviews, conceptual and empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the use of participatory video (PV) in international development. PV can be defined as film-making with people (instead of about them), where citizens create and use their own films in order to understand and act on the issues that concern them. Drawing on our own experience of working with communities in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, we offer an opportunity to experience and reflect on the use of PV in practice through hands-on activities, examples and discussion.

    12 places

This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore some of the issues of using participatory video (PV) within international development. We invite participants to share some of the projects or ideas they are working on in order to consider the ethical, technical and organisational issues that come up when using participatory video in practice. The workshop will be an excellent opportunity to think through whether and how PV can be used in your own work. It will best suit development practitioners or students with their own projects.

Roskilde University Sunrise Conference

Rising demands, fiscal constraints and a growing number of wicked problems have generated an increasing demand for innovation of public policy, public services and public regulation. Public innovation is rapidly moving to the top of the agenda at all levels of government. It is increasingly recognized as the intelligent alternative to across the board budget cuts and as a promising way of improving services, user satisfaction and the motivation of public employees. At the same time, there is a growing frustration with traditional forms of bureaucratic governance as well as with the recent New Public Management reforms that both tend to stifle rather than enhance public innovation. Hence in order to turn public innovation into a permanent, pervasive and systematic activity in the public sector we need to transform the current system of public governance. We need to reform public organisations and the predominant accountability and value-for-money systems, drill holes in the silos, mobilise an engage private actors, create new collaborative arenas, and develop new forms of innovation management. In short, we need to transform governance in order to enhance public innovation. The Roskilde University Sunrise Conference aims to explore the link between governance and innovation by bringing together academic scholars, experienced practitioners and interested students. The three groups will work in parallel streams to craft innovative solutions to public policy problems, ponder the need for administrative reforms and explore how transformations of governance can enhance public innovation. However, the three groups will also engage in fruitful dialogue with each other culminating in the formulation of the Roskilde Public Innovation Declaration that we hope will set the agenda for innovation-enhancing governance reforms in the years to come.

Rising citizen expectations, fiscal constraints and a growing number of wicked problems have generated an increasing demand for innovation of public policies and services. Public innovation is rapidly moving to the top of the agenda at all levels of government in most parts of the world. Innovation is increasingly recognized as the intelligent alternative to across the board budget cuts and as a promising way of improving services, user satisfaction and the motivation of public employees without augmenting public expenditure.

At the same time, there is a growing frustration with traditional forms of bureaucratic governance as well as with the impact of New Public Management reforms. Both forms of governance tend to stifle rather than enhance public innovation. Turning public innovation into a permanent, pervasive and systematic activity calls for a transformation of governance. This includes a transformation of the predominant accountability and value-for-money systems, the building of a strong public innovation culture, forms of organization that drill holes in the administrative and political silos, mobilise and engage private actors, create new collaborative arenas, and facilitate mutual and transformative learning, and the development of new forms of innovation management. In short, we need to transform governance in order to enhance public innovation.

The Roskilde University Sunrise Conference aims to explore the link between governance and innovation by bringing together academic scholars, experienced practitioners and interested students. The three groups will work in parallel streams to craft innovative solutions to public policy problems, ponder the need for administrative reform and explore how transformations of governance can enhance public innovation. However, the three groups will also engage in fruitful dialogue with each other, culminating in the formulation of the Roskilde Public Innovation Manifesto that will hopefully set the agenda for innovation-enhancing governance reforms in the years to come.

The researcher stream runs through all three conference days (29.-31. October, 2012). It combines keynote speeches delivered by distinguished scholars in the field of public governance, administration and entrepreneurship with round table discussions and parallel panel sessions with paper presentations. More than 100 researchers from all over the world will participate in the scholarly debates that aim to clarify how the current system of public governance can be transformed in order to spur innovation. The researcher stream is organized as a regional conference of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM).

Video presentation of the conference by Professor Jacob Torfing

The decision-maker stream runs parallel to the researcher stream on the second day of the conference (30. October, 2012). Close to 100 personally invited decision-makers from different sectors and from all levels of government will together explore the need for developing innovative solutions to wicked problems and discuss how the barriers to public innovation, which they are experiencing in their daily work, can be overcome. The decision-maker stream is facilitated by top-level facilitators and academic researchers, high-level consultants and other resource persons will provide substantive input and inspirational comments. The end product will be a wish list with ideas to how we can make the public sector more innovative. This wish list will be presented to the researchers and the students in a plenary session on the third day of the conference (31. October, 2012) and it forms the backbone of the Manifesto that will be adopted at the very end of the conference.

The student stream will run parallel to the researcher- and the decision-maker stream on the second day of the conference (30. October, 2012). About 70 students from different Danish BA and Master Programs will work hard to find innovative solutions to three pre-selected wicked problems. The stream will be facilitated by experienced PhD-students who are experts in public innovation. Throughout the day, researchers and professionals will be invited to help guiding the students through different innovation phases in terms of problem framing, idea generation, idea implementation and dissemination. The three most innovative, and yet feasible, solutions - one for each of the wicked problems they have addressed - will be awarded the Sunrise Innovation Award on the third day of the conference (31. October, 2012).

In sum, the Sunrise Conference provides a unique opportunity for leading academic researchers, public decision makers with hands-on innovation experience and talented students with a strong interest in solving mounting societal problems to come together and engage in fruitful dialogue. The overarching goal is to set the future agenda for innovation-enhancing governance reforms and thus to take the first step in building a public sector that can solving the growing number of wicked problems, break the many regulatory policy deadlocks and provide high quality service in times with dire fiscal constraints.

Subjectivity and Learning in Everyday Life

  • Subjectivity and Learning in Everyday Life

    May 26, 2010 – May 28, 2010

This conference focuses on the everyday practices of persons, and the interplay between actors and social structures in everyday life. Everyday life in the Nordic and Europeans societies is characterized by an unprecedented rupture of economic and political systems, cultural meanings and individual identities. Global and environmental changes force us to revise and reconsider our way of life and affects us at all levels of existence. It appears as if that which seems stable today will be rendered unstable tomorrow.

The conference focuses on these changes and transformations and aims to debate and discuss how this can be understood and explored. What theories, methodologies and analytical concepts help us to study the transformations of everyday life in changing societies?

The conference will be the third in a series of international conferences organized by the Nordic Research Network for Everyday Life Processes in European Societies (ELPiES). The network was founded in 2007 by Kajsa Ellegård, Department of Technology and Social Change, Linköping University, Sweden, Lars Dencik and Allan Westerling, Department of Psychology and Educational Studies, Roskilde University, Denmark, and Pirjo Korvela, Department of Home Economics and Craft Science, University of Helsinki, Finland. In 2009 the ELPiES network received a major grant by the Nordic Council of Ministers to develop a Nordic Master Program in Everyday Life Studies.

During the conference scholars will meet, discuss and exchange ideas, perspectives and research practices in everyday life studies. The research field comprises multi- and interdisciplinary approaches and dwells on different complexes of problems concerning people's daily lives in different phases of the life course. A general focus of the conference will be on the theoretical and methodological challenges in the study of everyday life.

The conference will comprise six sub-themes during the conference. Keynote presentations will be given the first day and workshops on each sub-theme will be held the second day. The third day will focus on the theoretical and methodological challenges of everyday life research.

    Ben Highmore, University of Sussex
